Lake Manasarovar – Know It All!
The Lake Manasarovar is considered to be the holiest freshwater lake on the planet. It is also the highest freshwater lake in the world. It is situated in Tibet and it is known as Mapam Yumco in the Tibetan language which translates to unconquered or invisible turquoise lake. The lake covers an area of 410km2 and is located at an altitude of 15,060 feet. It is the holiest lake of Tibet and it is 32 km away from the sacred peak of Tibet, the Mt. Kailash. The Lake Manasarovar is surrounded by huge Himalayan peaks and it is also regarded to be one of Tibet’s most beautiful lakes. It is the main pilgrimage destination for Hindus, Buddhist and the Bons which is an indigenous Tibetan religion. There are 5 of the Buddhist monasteries present on the shore of Lake Manasarovar namely the Chiu, Trugo, Gossul, Seralung, and Yerngo. The Hindus believe that the lake was created by Lord Brahma and they swim or wade and also drink the waters of the Lake. It is because of the writing “like pearls and that to drink them erases the sins of a hundred lifetimes” by the famous Sanskrit poet Kalidasa. The Tibetans do not swim in this lake. Mahatma Gandhi’s ashes were also dispersed in the waters of this lake.
The best time to visit Lake Manasarovar if from April to the end of October. After this period, the guest houses in these regions and nearby regions shut down for winter. Also, the restaurants and hotels will be closed during this season. The best weather is observed from April to October. It may be a little cold after mid-may but all the places will be open for you to stay and visit. This western part of Tibet is quite dry and so you will not experience rains. However, you may observe clouds from July to August.

You can reach the lake Manasarovar and the surrounding regions only through a proper tour agency. Lake Manasarovar yatra requires a tour guide, private vehicle, driver and travel permit. It is a very remote lake and it will take you 15 to 18 days to reach the lake. Proper acclimatization is very much required because it is located at a very high altitude.
